The Holy Trinity is the fundamental doctrine of Orthodox Christianity which affirms that God is one in essence but exists in three persons (hypostases): Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Unity in Trinity

The three hypostases of the Holy Trinity are not three different Gods but one God. They are united in divine essence, have one will, one power and act as one God. This is a mystery that transcends human understanding, yet is central to Christian faith.

Father

God the Father is the source of all being, the first cause of all creation. He is unbegotten and proceeds from no one, but is the cause of the Son's being (through generation) and the Holy Spirit (through procession).

Son

God the Son, Jesus Christ, is eternally begotten of the Father. Through incarnation He became man, lived among us, died on the cross and rose again, granting salvation to all humanity. He is the perfect image of the Father through whom we know God.

Holy Spirit

God the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, gives life and renews all creation. He was sent into the world after Christ's ascension to abide with the faithful, sanctify them and lead them into all truth.

Historical Definition

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity was definitively formulated at the First (325 AD) and Second (381 AD) Ecumenical Councils and is reflected in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, which remains the foundation of Orthodox confession to this day.

Christology is the central doctrine of Christianity that examines the nature and person of Jesus Christ, His mission and the significance of His life, death and resurrection for humanity's salvation.

Divine-Human Nature of Christ

Orthodox teaching affirms that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully human - two natures, indivisibly and unconfusedly united in one person (hypostasis). This doctrine was formulated at the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD).

Incarnation

The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God, assumed human nature through birth from the Virgin Mary. This incarnation was necessary for humanity's salvation, as only God who became man could bridge the gap between Creator and creation.

Salvific Work

Christ voluntarily accepted suffering and death on the cross to atone for the sins of all humanity. His resurrection on the third day established victory over death and sin and opened the way to resurrection for all the faithful.

Historical Discussions

Throughout centuries, theological discussions about Christ's nature have taken place. Among the most significant heresies were:

• Arianism - denied the fullness of Christ's divinity
• Nestorianism - excessively divided divine and human natures
• Monophysitism - claimed human nature was absorbed by the divine

Significance for the Faithful

Orthodox Christology emphasizes that through Christ's incarnation all humanity received the possibility of theosis (deification) - participation in divine life through grace. Christ is the perfect example of what humanity should be in unity with God.

Theosis (deification) is a central concept of Orthodox soteriology, meaning the process of becoming like God and participating in divine life through grace. It expresses the profound goal of Christian life and understanding of salvation in Orthodoxy.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of theosis is based on biblical texts, particularly the words of Apostle Peter that we are called to be "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4), and Christ's words "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).

Patristic Teaching

St. Athanasius the Great expressed the classical formulation of this teaching: "God became man so that man might become god." This does not mean man becomes God by nature, but that he can participate in divine energies through grace.

Important Aspects of Theosis

• Man does not become God by nature but is united with God through grace
• Theosis concerns the whole person - soul and body
• It is a gradual process that begins on earth and continues into eternity
• Christ's incarnation is a necessary precondition for man's deification

Path to Theosis

The path to theosis includes:

• Participation in Church sacraments, primarily the Eucharist
• Ascetic practices
• Purification from passions
• Acquisition of virtues
• Constant striving for union with God

Saints as Examples

Saints are examples of people who achieved a high degree of theosis during their earthly life. Their lives demonstrate that theosis is not an abstract theory but a reality accessible to those who seek union with God.

Everyday Life as Path to Holiness

Ordinary life with its cares, joys and trials becomes a place of encounter with God. A saint is not one who flees the world, but one who transforms it by faith. Humble work, honesty in business, care for family, prayer amidst bustle - all these acquire grace-filled depth through Christ.
